Will 2010 be the year biodiesel bounces back? One analyst thinks so
Speaking at the 2010 Biodiesel Conference & Expo this week, Reynolds said this year will be a time of "recovery and renewed momentum" for the biodiesel industry. There are a few factors that play into his prediction. First, the economy - still battered and in trouble - is getting better and will keep moving upwards. Second, biodiesel is a winning fuel because it is "important to our national security. Biodiesel is critical to cutting into our trade deficit by lowering our dependence on foreign oil." Of course, Reynolds could have said the same thing about ethanol, if he were speaking at an ethanol conference.

Biodiesel Smarter now offering U.S. map of B100 sales locations
Biodiesel Smarter magazine and designer David Huyck. The map is 34 inches wide by 22 inches tall and costs $20.
Biodiesel Smarter bills itself as "the magazine for biodiesel enthusiasts," and is rooted in the home-brewers mentality (a good thing). With articles like "Algae: The New Snake Oil" and "Dumping Glycerine for Fun and for Profit," it's not your standard biodiesel publication. Worth a read.

White House, EPA move forward on biofuel promotion and rules
As for the new rules, known as the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2), these are expected to be released by the EPA sometime today after being pushed back late last year. The most controversial part of these rules are that:
The standard could include a requirement that corn-based ethanol produce less carbon dioxide over its life cycle than gasoline. The ethanol industry opposes the life-cycle emissions requirement, which would include emissions from land cleared abroad resulting from growth of biofuel crops in the U.S. -- the so-called "indirect land use" effect.
The ethanol industry says any rule like this would be unfair.

Followup: Biodiesel-Earthrace boat sinks off coast of Antarctica
According to Sea Shepherd, footage captured of the event from all three previously mentioned vessels appears to indicate that the Japanese ship intentionally veered into the path of the Ady Gil. The impact sheered off the carbon fiber Ady Gil's nose. Judge for yourself after watching the video pasted after the break.
